Choreographer Zach is looking for eight performers for a Broadway musical.

They all have to go through a rigorous selection process, but the final audition for the 16 remaining hopefuls is no longer based solely on physical ability: the choreographer asks them to reveal a part of their innermost selves.

Richard Attenborough's adaptation of the Broadway musical, like the original, focuses on the intimate backstage world rather than the glamour of show business.

Professional and personal hierarchies are negotiated in a ruthlessly competitive environment, such as the rivalry between the more experienced dancers, who are victims of ageism, while the film’s musical interludes manage to convey the atmosphere of Broadway.
